Lizzano In Belvedere
The sanctuary of Madonna dell'Acero was built in 1535, and later widened till the XVIII century, on the site where, according to the legend, two young shepherds had a vision of the Madonna. The legend narrates that the Madonna rescued the two shepherds from a snow storm which occurred in the middle of the summer; also, one of the shepherds was born dumb and the Madonna healed him from his disability.
The cult for the miraculous event started with an image located on the tree of the apparition (a maple tree, as the name of the sanctuary indicates) and then the church was built.
Today, on august the 5th, a great number of people still celebrate the event.
In the past, several people left ex-votos to the church; Brunetto Brunori's family had a group of wooden statues carved to celebrate how he had miraculously survived in the battle of Gavinana on august the 3rd 1530.
